Splitting Headache
I decided to have my youngest son stay home with me today, instead of going to his Grandma's house, it sounded like a good idea. But, when he sleeps until 8:00am and I have to leave by 8:20am at the latest to get my oldest to kindergarten, the stellar idea begins to un-ravel. We got him to school late, but we got him there, then we got home and played, and I read books to him until my sinus headache reached critical mass, I couldn't see it hurt so bad. Try explaining to a 2 1/2 year old that you can't play or read to him because you have a headache; well I did try, he repeated the word headache to me and the next thing that came my way was another book to be read!! People say that your life changes when you have children. . . . it certainly does change, but simply stating that it changes without further explanation in very unfair. This allows the expecting parents to lend their own explanation to "your life will change" without basis of actual life experience in that particular field (this is a dangerous assumption on their part). So, when the bundle of joy comes along and he gets put on the crib in the nursery for the first time, and Mom and Dad beam down on their child- who is sleeping; they say to themselves "Gee, this is not as bad as we thought it was going to be!" Again, couple that realization with the fact that they were working with flawed data to begin with, this is a very dangerous situation. Flash forward to evening, a bottle is given, several subtle belches are coaxed from baby, and baby is cuddled. "Wow, this is great we were right, the only thing that has changed is our financial status has been stretched a little, and we have an addition to the family we are now 3!!" 3:00 AM the rubber meets the road, Mom and Dad sound asleep, baby not, he is screaming "What do you think is the matter?" One parent says (it doesn't much matter who says it), the debate then starts, who will get up and check on #3? (Observation: these new parents have not yet learned the "possum rule", don't react to the baby's first cry, my spouse will!! Did you ever play chicken? Well in this case first one to move, not even a rollover to show your spouse how blissfully unaware you are of the commotion in the next room can be ignored, if you move even a eyelid, then you are more than capable of getting up, trudging downstairs, making the bottle, warming it up, then cooling it off because you made it too warm, all the while the crying by this point is hysterical, all despite your heroic efforts.) Once the bottle is sufficiently not hot, you prepare to head back upstairs, only to be met midway up the stairs with a glare from your significant other, that is usually preceded by a rather disgusted "Whoosh" of the sheet which can also be heard downstairs OVER the cry of the baby!! The look says "Can't you hear our precious little baby crying, the poor helpless thing is probably starving, or festering in his own waste??" (Read: "I am trying to get some sleep!!"). Once the baby has been fed, changed, cuddled, cooed to, etc, etc. you happily head off to bed secure in the knowledge that at next feeding time you are free to roll over as much as you want!!!
